Hello! On this occasion, I’ll be sharing some fantastic Latin American artists you should listen to feel the Latin American vibe! Of course, this list doesn’t include the megastars you already know like Shakira, Maluma, Nicky Jam, J Balvin, etc… it’s more about indie / alternative artists that are super cool down here!
She is originally from Mexico, and she got a lot of popularity during the 2000’s with her song “En el 2000”, a very catchy pop song. Since then, she has changed her music style A LOT! In 2015, she released her album called “Hasta la Raiz” (translation would be like ‘Until the roots’). This album, made her win 5 Latin Grammy on 2015: “Best Alternative Music Album”, “Best Engineered album”, “Record of the year”, “Song of the year” and “Best alternative song”. This record is said to be the best album that Natalia Lafourcade’s has ever done.
His name sounds very American; indeed he was born in Alaska and lived in the US until he was around 14 years old. He had an Argentinan mother, and I’d say most of his songs (if not all), are in Spanish and are just awesome! One of his most famous albums is “Logo”, released in 2006.
Monserrat Bustamante, also known by her artistic name “Mon Laferte”, is a Chilean artist that started her career at the Chilean talent show called “Rojo” (back in the 2000’s – I used to watch it), where she sang pop-catchy-mainstream music. Once the show ended, her career was stuck so she decided to move to Mexico, where during the last few years, her career exploded with her original style! Now she is back to Chile with sold out shows!
This band is catalogued as the best Argentinian rock band EVER in the history of history! Sadly, the lead singer, Gustavo Cerati, died in 2014 at only 55 years old. The group split up in 2007, and everyone started solo careers. They sold out shows in several countries of Latin America like Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, among others, which is very uncommon for a Spanish-rock band. Recently, Cirque Du Soleil decided to make a show about Soda Stereo (like they did before for Michael Jackson). I had the chance to see the show in Santiago, Chile and it was incredible!
Anita Tijoux is a Chilean-french musician known for being the MC of the hip-hop group “Makiza” back in the 90’s; now she has her solo career! She is the daughter of Chilean parents living in political exile in France during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile. She was nominated for the Grammy awards in 2007 with her album “Vengo”.
So that’s my top 5 of Latin American artists you should listen! There are so many others musicians, really talented, that I could share with you. There is going to be a part 2 of this post, just wait for it!
Let me know if you liked any of these artists; perhaps you added a song to your playlist?
